NEWBERG, Ore. – Three different softball camps for athletes of various ages and skill levels, two focusing on offense and defense and one designed for pitchers only, will be hosted by George Fox University this summer under the supervision of Bruins’ head coach Jessica Hollen, along with her assistant coaches and several of her team’s players.
The first camp, for boys and girls ages 12 and under, is set for Thursday, June 21, from 1:00-5:00 p.m. The second camp, for youth ages 13 and up, is set for Thursday, August 9, from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Each camp will provide both offensive and defensive stations, with batters focusing on hitting, bunting, and base running, and defensive fundamentals for catchers, infielders and outfielders.
The Bruins’ pitching camp for youth of all ages is scheduled for Friday, August 10, from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 noon. Pitchers will learn the mechanics of pitching, how to throw various pitches, pitching strategies, and fielding the position.
Directing the camp is Hollen, the Bruins’ fourth-year coach who was the 2012 Northwest Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Bruins to the NWC Tournament, their first post-season appearance in 18 years. Assisting her will be assistant coaches John Hollen and Dave Kellmer, along with current George Fox players.
Each athlete should bring his or her own bats, gloves, helmet, and catching gear. Players should wear athletic shorts or sweats / softball pants (no jeans), T-shirts, and bring both tennis shoes and cleats, as sessions will be conducted on the Morse Athletic Complex softball field and in the Wheeler Sports Center’s Miller Gym.
Players may sign up for as many of the age-appropriate camps as they wish to attend. The cost of each camp is $50.00 per person, and all players who register by the deadlines will receive a camp T-shirt. The deadline for the first camp is Friday, June 15, while the deadline for the second camp and the pitching camp is Friday, Aug. 3.
Registration forms along with a check for $50.00 made out to “Bruin Softball” should be returned by the appropriate deadline to Jessica Hollen at George Fox University, 414 N. Meridian St., Box 6147, Newberg, OR 97132. Please be sure to mark the T-shirt size preferred on the registration form.
