MBSK: Stocker Leads Comeback to Earn BAA, NWC HM Honors for Nov. 23-29
NEWBERG, Ore. - Scoring 14 points in a six-minute span in the second half, Alex Stockner sparked George Fox to a come-from-behind win in the Bruins' only game of the week to earn Bruin Athletic Association Men's Athlete of the Week and honorable mention for Northwest Conference Men's Basketball Student-Athlete of the Week for Nov. 23-29.
With the Bruins down by nine at home to Corban on Nov. 24, Stockner started his outburst with a layup at the 16:19 mark to cut the Warriors' lead to 55-48. Over the next 5:33, he scored 12 more points as the Bruins trimmed the deficit to three at 71-68, and that momentum carried them eventually to a 99-91 win, their first of the season. Stockner finished with a game-high 25 points, 18 in the second half, on 8-11 field goals (2-2 on threes) and 7-10 free throws, with four rebounds and two assists.
Stockner, a senior forward from Monmouth, Ore., currently leads the Northwest Conference in field goal pct. (.722) and 3-pt field goal pct. (1.000) while ranking 3rd in scoring (20.5) and 10th in free throw pct. (.813). He was an All-NWC honorable mention selection last year after transferring to George Fox from Western Oregon, and won the BAA weekly award six times while receiving honorable mention for NWC Student-Athlete of the Week seven times.
The Athlete of the Week Award for both men and women is presented throughout the Bruin sports seasons by the Bruin Athletic Association, whose mission is to provide George Fox student-athletes with an outstanding athletic and academic experience and to strengthen the overall competitiveness of the Bruin athletics program.
