WHITWORTH 3, GEORGE FOX 0: Trio of Pirates Trump Bruins with a Goal Apiece
SPOKANE, Wash. - With a trio of players contributing one goal apiece, the Whitworth University Pirates ended a three-game losing streak with a 3-0 win over the visiting the George Fox University Bruins in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match Saturday afternoon here at the Whitworth Soccer Field.
Kekoa Mountcastle's goal in the 14th minute ended Whitworth's scoreless stretch at 371 minutes. Justin Meyer fed the ball forward to Nate Spangler, whose one-touch cross was finished by Mountcastle for his third goal of the season.
Andrew French scored the Pirates' second goal in the 38th minute, his second of the season, and Spangler earned his second assist of the match on the play. Whitworth took that 2-0 lead into the halftime.
Meyer, who played at George Fox as a freshman, rounded out the scoring with his second goal of the year in the 77th minute. He tracked down a ball on the left side, carried it by two defenders into the box, and scored into the bottom right corner of the net.
Whitworth outshot George Fox 21-6, including a 6-0 edge in shots on goal. The Pirates outshot the Bruins 10-0 over the first 12 minutes, with one attempt hitting the cross bar and another hitting the left post. Nick Schoen led George Fox with three shot attempts. Whitworth also held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Elliott Davis made two saves in goal for George Fox, and Kasey Haugen, who played the final 10+ minutes, made one stop. Whitworth's Kyle Novak did not have to make a save in posting his fifth shutout of the season.
