GEORGE FOX 8, COLLEGE OF IDAHO 1: Bruins Defeat Coyotes in Spring Season Opener
NEWBERG, Ore. - Getting the spring portion of their 2010-11 men’s tennis season off to a solid start, the George Fox University Bruins recorded an 8-1 victory over the visiting College of Idaho Coyotes in a non-conference match on a crisp but dry Saturday afternoon here at the GFU campus courts.
The Bruins swept through the opening doubles with relative ease as Scott Barnett and Preston Mann bested the Coyotes’ Chenjerai Simpson and Mark Malmstrom 8-1 at No. 1, Peter Brown and Josiah Jackson dropped Isaac Creed and Thomas McMahon 8-4 at No. 2, and Justin McClain and Andy Tweet topped Jaron Tietsort and Joel Hernandez 8-3 at No. 3.
The ‘Yotes put up a tougher tussle in the subsequent singles matches, picking up a win at No. 3 when Creed fought back for a 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win over McClain. The No. 2 singles also went three sets before the Bruins’ Brown prevailed over Malmstrom 3-6, 6-0, 6-4.
George Fox took the other four singles in straight sets. Barnett bettered Simpson 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1, Mann manhandled Hernandez 6-0,6-1 at No. 4, Jackson jumped on McMahon 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5, and Tweet took the measure of James Collet 6-3,6-2 at No. 6.
NEXT: George Fox (1-0) returns to the courts in a week, hosting the University of Puget Sound in its Northwest Conference opener Saturday at 12:00 noon ... The College of Idaho (0-3) plays Sunday at 10:00 a.m. at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore., in a non-conference match.
