NEWBERG, Ore. - A blistering week at the plate as the George Fox University Bruins went 3-3 on their season-opening softball road trip through southern California has earned lefty-swinging right fielder Felicia Chavez the Bruin Athletic Association Women’s Athlete of the Week award for the week of Feb. 6-12.
Chavez, a sophomore from Los Angeles, Calif., pounded out a .421 batting average in six games, with eight hits in 19 at bats. She collected a double, three triples and a home run for 18 total bases, giving her a sizzling .947 slugging percentage for the week, and had a team-leading .450 on-base percentage. She also scored six runs, had a team-high five RBIs, and stole three bases in as many attempts.
Chavez began by going 2-4 with a double, two steals and two runs scored in the Bruins’ season-opening 7-3 win at Occidental on Thursday, then went 1-3 with a run and a steal in an 8-4 second-game win. She went 1-5 with a triple and an RBI in a doubleheader loss to Chapman on Friday. In a twinbill split at California Lutheran on Sunday, she was 2-5 with a home run and two runs scored in a 10-5 first-game win, then went 2-2 with a pair of triples, a run and three RBIs in a 9-7 second-game loss.
The George Fox Athlete of the Week Award for both men and women is presented throughout the Bruin sports seasons by the Bruin Athletic Association, whose mission is to provide George Fox student-athletes with an outstanding athletic and academic experience and to strengthen the overall competitiveness of the Bruin athletics program. NEXT: George Fox will participate in the Northwest Cup Tournament, hosted by Concordia University-Portland, this Friday-Sunday, Feb. 17-19, at the Hood View Park softball complex in Clackamas, Ore.
The Bruins will play two games on Saturday and two on Sunday. On Saturday, they will take on the College of Idaho at 9:00 a.m. and host Concordia-Portland at 11:00 a.m. On Sunday, they will meet the Oregon Institute of Technology at 11:00 a.m., then after a break, take on Northwest Christian University at 3:00 p.m.
All the Bruins’ opponents in the tournament are members of the NAIA and the Cascade Collegiate Conference. Oregon Tech is the defending NAIA national champion and the pre-season No. 1 pick in the nation, while the College of Idaho and Concordia-Portland both received votes for the top 25 in the pre-season poll.
“No question, we are facing some of the toughest competition we will face all season in this tournament,” asserts Bruin head coach Jessica Hollen, “but this should help prepare us for our own Northwest Conference schedule, which has some equally-impressive teams. There’s no doubt we are an improved and more competitive team this year, and we’ll get a good idea how much this weekend.”
