* Coming Up :
Sat.- Sun., Oct. 23-24 - Northwest Conference Fall Classic, Lost Tracks GC, Bend, Ore.
(Tee times - 9:00 a.m.)
The George Fox Bruins will be out to defend their 2009 Northwest Conference Fall Classic title when the 2010 NWC Fall Classic takes place this Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 23-24, at the Lost Tracks Golf Course in Bend, Ore. Tee times are set for 9:00 a.m.
Linfield will be the host team for the Classic, which features all nine conference schools in their final tournament of the fall. Points are awarded for the order of finish, starting with eight points for the first-place team down to no points for ninth. The points count as one quarter of the total toward determining the overall conference champion (the NWC Spring Classic counts another quarter, while the NWC Championship Tournament in late spring counts double, or one-half of the total).
In last year’s NWC Fall Classic at the Heron Lakes Golf Course Green Back course in Portland, Ore., George Fox rallied from eight strokes back after the first day to win by 12 strokes over Whitworth with a 342-309=651. With three Bruins shooting sub-80 rounds, they established new team records for best 18-hole score and best 36-hole score, which are also believed to be NWC Fall Classic records.
Emily Guthrie of Whitworth took medalist honors with an 80-77=157, but the story of the day was a remarkable performance by the Bruins’ Jill Westendorf, who knocked 16 strokes off her first day’s score and finished second with an 88-72=160. She spent most of the day under par, not shooting her first bogey until the 15th hole, but followed that up with a birdie on the par-3 16th to go back to two-under. Although she took bogeys on the last two holes to finish with an even-par 72, she carded the best 18-hole round in the four-year history of the George Fox program.
Also posting sub-80 rounds for the Bruins were Brianna Nap, who tied for third with an 87-78=165, and Kelsey Morrison, who tied for fifth with an 87-79=166. Sarah Askin, who had the Bruins’ best score on Saturday, tied Nap for third with an 82-83=165, while Mandy Cameron tied for fifth with an 86-80=166, giving the Bruins four players in the top five spots. Abby Mann rounded out the George Fox contingent with a 95-89=184, tying for 23rd.
* Recent Results:
Oct. 15-16 - 2nd of 7 in Culturame Women’s Classic
The Bruins shot a 330-325=655 to finish second out of seven teams as the host for the first Culturame Women’s Classic at the Pumpkin Ridge Golf Course in North Plains, Ore., on Oct. 15-16. Hawai’i-Hilo took first place with a score of 315-311=626 on the par-72, 5,802-yard Ghost Creek course. Medalist honors went to Dayna Bersamin of Hawai’i-Hilo with a four-over-par 73-75=148. Jill Westendorf shot an 80-80=160 to lead the Bruins and placed sixth. Right behind her was Kelsey Morrison with an 81-80=161 in seventh place. Brianna Nap had an 80-83=163 to place ninth. She was followed by Mandy Cameron with an 89-82=171 (tied for 15th), Sarah Askin with a 91-85=176 (tied for 18th), and Abby Mann with an 83-104=187, good for 25th.
