O’BRIEN INVITATIONAL: Bruins Finish 6th, Morrison Makes All-Tournament Team
O'Brien National Invitational Results
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Kelsey Morrison earned All-Tournament honors by tying for third place in the individual standings while the George Fox University Bruins slipped from fourth to sixth in the team scores as the O’Brien National Invitational Tournament concluded Monday morning here at the University of Notre Dame’s Warren Golf Course.
George Fox shot a four-player score of 326 on Monday to finish with a two-day score of 323-326=649. The Bruins had been tied for fourth after Sunday’s round with the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, which ended up fifth with a 323-319=642.
Methodist University, the 14-time defending NCAA Division III national champion, won the tournament with a 315-315=630, one shot ahead of DePauw University’s 317-314=631. Washington University-St. Louis had Monday’s best round and finished third at 334-305=639. Centre College was fourth at 315-326=641.
Following behind the Bruins were Allegheny College at 327-328=655, Gustavus Adolphus College at 338-324=662, host St. Mary’s College at 338-343=681, and Baldwin-Wallace College at 347-345=692. All the teams except Baldwin-Wallace were ranked in the top 11 in the Golf World / National Golf Coaches Association pre-season poll.
Morrison was one of five players tied for the tournament lead heading into Monday’s action, and shot a 77 to finish with a 76-77=153 score, nine over par. Neither she nor any of the players who had been tied with her were able to fend off a phenomenal charge by Olivia Lugar of Washington, who shot a sizzling one-under-par 71 to capture medalist honors with a score of 78-71=149.
Second place went to Catherine Wagner of Eau Claire with a 77-75=152. Tied with Morrison were Methodist teammates Kelsie Carralero at 76-77=153 and Kelsey Magnine at 77-76=153. The top five finishers were all named to the All-Tournament Team.
Also scoring for the Bruins on Monday were Jill Westendorf, who tied for 22nd with an 82-83=165; Megan McGrew, who also tied for 22nd with an 80-85=165; and Abby Mann,whose 85-81=166 tied for 28th. Rounding out the George Fox scores were Loreece Magsanide, tied for 43rd at 86-87=173, and Lanee Danforth, tied for 53rd at 92-88=180.
NEXT: George Fox will compete in the Pacific University Invitational on Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 24-25, at the Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks, Ore. Tee times are to be announced.
